League-leaders Racing Club hosted Boca Juniors on Sunday evening and led for nearly 75 minutes before a calamitous conclusion.

The visiting Xeneizes turned around the game in a five-minute flurry near the end of regulation.

Lisandro López scored for the home side in just the seventh minute of play, giving Racing the early lead against Boca.

Augusto Solari hit a cross from the right channel to Guillermo Matías Fernández, whose shot was blocked by Boca defender Paolo Goltz. López tucked home the rebound past a helpless Agustín Rossi in net.

After taking the lead, Racing did well to hold on as their visitors grew into the match. Despite the danger in their attack, Boca failed to beat goalkeeper Gabriel Arias.

In the second half, the home team doubled their lead when López scored his second of the night. Matías Zaracho set up the centre forward who grabbed his brace in 66th minute.

Ramón Ábila pulled one back for Boca Juniors right before the match unraveled for Racing Club. Ábila scored in the 82nd minute on a rebound after Arias spilled a shot from distance.

Zaracho earned his second booking and subsequent marching orders in the 84th minute.

Ábila then set up team-mate Sebastián Villa in the 87th minute for Boca’s equaliser. Villa fired through the legs of goalkeeper Arias to tie the game late.

The result keeps Racing Club in first place in the Superliga 2018-19 table on 20 points but they had the victory within their reach at home.

Boca Juniors can take some momentum from a match in which little went right through 80 minutes but Guillermo Barros Scheletto’s team still earned a point. In that respect, this is another positive result for the Xeneizes to move past the defeat in the Superclásico. Boca now have 14 points after Matchday 8.
