Inter Milan are reportedly poised to drop out of the race to land Liverpool central midfielder Gini Wijnaldum on a free transfer this summer.

According to the printed edition of TuttoSport, as transcribed by SempreInter, Inter have been put off by Wijnaldum’s wage demands and are likely to move on to other targets.

This comes after news earlier this week that Bayern Munich have also decided to exit the race for Wijnaldum for the same reason.

This adds more weight to the update on Tuesday claiming that Wijnaldum is now open to signing a new contract at Liverpool. Wijnaldum has reportedly struggled to garner the level of interest in his services that he could have done pre-pandemic as clubs across Europe are dealing with the financial impact Covid-19 has had over the last 12-13 months.

With Inter and Bayern seemingly out of the running for his signature, it now appears to be a straight shoot-out between Barcelona and Liverpool. Barcelona are said to be the favourites to land Wijnaldum, with Ronald Koeman keen to bring his compatriot to the Camp Nou at the end of the campaign. This means that Wijnaldum’s future could solely depend on how much money Barcelona are willing to offer him.

If the Spanish giants are not able to offer him as much as he is currently on at Liverpool, then the midfielder could potentially be convinced to stay at Merseyside. Wijnaldum, as mentioned above, has not closed the door on a contract extension at Liverpool and Barcelona’s actions in the coming weeks and months could dictate what he decides to do.
