Motherwell defender Paul McGinn gave his post-match thoughts on the game at Celtic Park on Saturday afternoon. Motherwell lost to Celtic but the 2-1 scoreline undoubtedly flattered the visitors. Motherwell ‘s only possible scoring chance came in the late stages of the match with a chance coming from a loose pass from Reo Hatate but was cut short by the intervention from Callum McGregor, which resulted in a red card for the Celtic captain and left supporters playing Spot the Difference.

As a result of that, McGinn was left frustrated. He believed Motherwell had performed well, indeed had played well for the two games prior to the trip to Parkhead, but have ultimately been unable to take anything away from the three games. As reported by The Glasgow Times, McGinn said…

“We are frustrated. I thought when we were brave on the ball we caused them problems. I thought we could have been braver. For the first 20 minutes, I thought we were a bit like rabbits in the headlights.

“Celtic can do that to teams. But I thought we actually had a bit of composure, the goal helps with that, it calms you down. That is now three games in a row where we have played quite well and got nothing. Football is a tough game.”

Motherwell’s gaffer set out an aggressive game plan to take on the Scottish champions. Hammell’s tactics worked in areas but ultimately fell short of defeating the Hoops. McGinn continued: “I think if you sit against Celtic they will just murder you anyway. You need to take risks.

“We have a goalkeeper who can take the ball and that helps. We can go through him. I watch Real Madrid pass to their keeper a hundred times. It is good that we have that option.

“I felt we could have actually done that more as it frustrates Celtic. They press and press you, but they are human, they can’t keep doing that. When we did we knew in the final third we had threats with set pieces. It is hard not to be frustrated.”

For a team of time-wasters who had little or no interest in playing any form of expansive football, it’s hard not to diagree with McGinn’s assessment. Celtic have a few trips to Fir Park coming up and those will give us a chance to pile on the agony by turning on the style.
