BERWICK RANGERS… 0

Celtic FC B stretched their unbeaten run in 2024 to 10 games after defeating Berwick Rangers 1-0 on Saturday afternoon.

Ben Quinn’s second-half strike was enough to separate the sides as the young Hoops picked up another three points in the Lowland League.

Following on from their midweek Glasgow Cup victory over Queen's Park, the Bhoys returned to league duties at the Excelsior Stadium.

And in the opening stages of the match, Celtic made a strong start, quickly looking to open the scoring and playing some nice football in the first half.

The first shot on target came inside the opening 10 minutes as Lewis Dobbie looked to follow up has hat-trick last week against Gala Fairydean with an early strike.

The ball fell to the forward on the edge of the area and he tried his luck with a first time shot, which was comfortably held.

As the half went on, the young Hoops continued to enjoy large spells of the ball as they attempted to find the all-important opener.

The best chance of the first 45 minutes fell the way of Daniel Cummings, who tried to find the top corner with a strike from inside the area, but it was tipped over the crossbar by the goalkeeper.

Just before the break, the Celts were handed a boost as the visitors were reduced to 10 men as the half-time whistle approached.

Shortly after receiving his first yellow card of the match, James Stevenson was shown a second yellow for what appeared to be dissent towards the referee.

Heading into the second half, the Bhoys looked to try and make that advantage count, and right at the start of the half Thomas Hatton came close to grabbing a goal with a header at the back post.

However, it took until the hour mark for the Celts to break the deadlock as Ben Quinn opened the scoring with a tap-in at the back post.

A quickly-worked free-kick seen Bruno Davidson deliver a ball across the six-yard box which the young Irishman was on hand to finish inside the area.

Despite the Hoops’ dominance, the away side did have a chance to level up the scoring from a corner. However, Daniel Cummings was switched on at the back post, heading the ball off the line.

In the last half hour, Celtic pushed to try and find a second which would secure victory as Davidson slipped Dobbie in behind, but his touch took him too wide to threaten the Berwick goal.

Ultimately, Quinn’s second-half strike was enough to seal victory though, as the Bhoys continued to build up their momentum since the turn of the year.

After a busy week of action, the Celts will quickly return to the Excelsior Stadium as they aim to maintain their unbeaten run, welcoming Civil Service Strollers to Airdrie this Wednesday (February 28).
