Cruz Azul have been having one of the best Liga MX seasons in recent memory.
After defeating Monterrey 2-0 in the Copa MX final on Halloween, La Maquina went 11-3-3 during the Apertura campaign to win the regular-season title – besting Club América by three points.
Despite a first-round Liguilla match-up with eighth-seeded Querétaro, Cruz Azul shouldn’t be too comfortable with their advantageous position.
That’s because, despite making the post-season just three times this decade, Querétaro have plenty of recent experience taking down higher seeds in the post-season.
During the 2015 Clausura, the last time Querétaro made the post-season, the sixth-seeded Gallos Blancos upset third-seeded Veracruz en route to the final – where they were defeated by eighth-seeded Santos Laguna.
In the 2011 Apertura, eighth-seeded Querétaro took down top-seeded Chivas 2-1 on aggregate before they were eliminated 1-0 by Tigres in the semi-finals.
As miraculous as that sounds, the top eight teams in Mexico’s top flight that season were only separated by four points.
This season, Cruz Azul and Querétaro are separated by 10 points, but La Maquina shouldn’t take their opponents lightly as they eye their first league title in over two decades.
The first leg will take place in Querétaro on Wednesday night, with the return leg at the Estadio Azteca this Saturday.
