Argentina avoided an embarrassing first round exit, Australia stunned Denmark to reach the knockout round and Tunisia picked up a memorable win over France.

But the best moment simply has to be the chaos that unfolded in the final 30 minutes in group C as things went permutation crazy between Poland and Mexico in their bid to join Argentina.

For much of that time until the last moment, it seemed that Mexico would be eliminated on one of the cruelest of tiebreakers, yellow cards accumulated, until they conceded at the death against Saudi Arabia which saw them eliminated on goal difference.

It was tough to keep up at times but the drama was incredible.

Do you have a memorable photo?

Even through the mask, you could sense the Mexican agony at their unusually early exit.

And for some bonus content in video form, check out the celebrations in Fed Square, Melbourne after Australia beat Denmark to advance to the round of 16 for just the second time.

Reminder: it was 4am local time!

Got any interesting stats or facts?

Wojciech Szczęsny made amends for conceding a penalty – even if the award was rather dubious.

But you can’t fault Messi’s overall consistency from 12 yards.

Following in Breel Embolo’s footsteps, Wahbi Khazri became the second player at this World Cup to score against the country of his birth. Both were 1-0 winners.

And if I need a laugh, what happened that’ll tickle me?

Given the time of Australia’s win locally, a national holiday couldn’t be granted but their prime minister is willing to grant one – if they bring the World Cup home.

He made himself a household name with his stunning strike against Mexico.

That is not a mistake you want to make.

So, I’m free today, what can I not afford to miss?

More drama! Belgium are aiming to avoid becoming the latest big side to exit prematurely, with themselves, Croatia and Morocco all fighting it out for two spots.

And in group E, Spain, Japan, Costa Rica and Germany all still have a chance of qualification!

And lastly, have you got a player to watch?

Niclas FĂŒllkrug captured the attention of a world audience with his cameo appearance off the bench against Spain last time.

He is a genuine throwback centre-forward from the old school physical target man mould but he is a ruthless finisher, as evidenced against La Roja.

The pressure is on for Germany and Hansi Flick in particular to pick him. Can he save his country’s World Cup hopes?
