The R's have fought off competition in their own league to try and get their target.

Newcastle United defender Harrison Ashby is set to become Queens Park Rangers' latest recruit, as a temporary deal is lined up for the defender.

The 22-year-old right-back is set to join QPR on a loan deal, according to the Daily Mail, and he will help them fill in a weak position in their backline.

The final day of this summer's transfer window isn't expected to be a hugely busy one for the R's. Most of their recruiting work has been done already, with marquee names like Karamoko Dembélé and Nicolas Madsen coming through the doors of Loftus Road, while some big ones like Lyndon Dykes have gone the opposite way.

Marti Cifuentes has helped to sure up the team's defence since he arrived, but a thin spot at the back still remains. The Hoops are hoping to have that addressed before the close of play today.

QPR nearing Harrison Ashby deal

Ashby is set to become the latest player to link up with QPR this summer, according to the Daily Mail.

Cifuentes has been using Jimmy Dunne on the right side of his defence in recent games, and Ashby - a player with Championship experience - will likely slot straight into that position.

He was on loan at Swansea City last season, where he made a baker's dozen appearances in the campaign.

It had been reported by Alan Nixon that both Blackburn Rovers and Stoke City were also keen on taking him. Nixon added that Newcastle and the player would need to feel confident that the 22-year-old would get a good amount of game time in order for him to head out on loan.

QPR should be able to offer that to him, and it looks like they are going to win the race for the Mapgies' youngster.

Ashby is only just over 18 months removed from joining Newcastle. They paid his former side West Ham United £3 million to get him, as per West London Sport.

Prior to moving to the northeast, he made Premier League, Europa League and Europa Conference League appearances for the Hammers.

Harrison Ashby deal rounds off a solid summer for QPR

The squad that Cifuentes has to work with has been dented by a couple of departures, but the R's have done well to fill those holes through other means.

Dembélé looks like he's going to be a star in West London and Madsen impressed in his first outing against Plymouth Argyle.

With Ashby set to arrive soon, QPR supporters can be happy with the business their side has done this summer.
