Queens Park Rangers are said to have hijacked the move for Peterborough United’s out of contract star Kwame Poku to Rangers.
Queens Park Rangers are said to have hijacked the move for Peterborough United’s out of contract star Kwame Poku to Rangers.
The Scottish giants, now managed by former Southampton boss Russel Martin, were heavily linked to the 23-year-old, but there is a new twist in the tale.
Sky Bet Championship outfit QPR are now linked to Poku, as the battle for his sought-after signature continues.
Journalist Pete O’Rourke has posted on his X account that QPR are “set to hijack” Rangers’ swoop for Poku, as he is ready to exit London Road at the end of his contract with Peterborough.
The winger had an injury-hit 2024/25 season, but still managed to notch double figures for both goals and assists.
He scored 12 times and provided ten assists across his 31 appearances, eclipsing the 20 goal involvements he managed in 49 all competition games the season before.
Poku’s first season at Peterborough, after moving from Colchester United in 2021, did not deliver.
He failed to score and only notched two assists, but he has since exploded and become one of the best players in the third tier.
In three successive Sky Bet League One campaigns, he has been one of the top performers and has carved out a crucial role within Darren Ferguson’s side. His reward is now set to be a move into the Championship, rather than a switch to the Scottish Premiership.
Peterborough are known for bringing through top young talents and pushing them onto the next stage of their respective careers.
Last summer, defensive trio Harrison Burrows, Ronnie Edwards and Josh Knight, all moved on, with the Posh then struggling to emulate their success in the most recent campaign.
Despite winning the EFL Trophy at Wembley Stadium, Peterborough were underwhelming in league action and finished the season in 18th after flirting with relegation for large portions.
One of the reasons for their struggles was the injury to Poku, as when he was out of action, Ferguson’s team lost a lot of their attacking threat.
So far this summer, midfielder Hector Kyprianou and sparkling attacker Ricky-Jade Jones have left the club, with another block of new talent needed to replace them.
Ghanaian international Poku is set to be next on the list, with QPR now one of the possible destinations for the productive winger at the end of his contract with Peterborough.
Under Spanish boss Marti Cifuentes, QPR finished 15th last season, a rise from the 18th and 20th-placed finishes they managed in the prior two campaigns.
