QPR defender Jimmy Dunne has weighed in on Lee Johnson’s decision to give Denver Hume the captaincy against Manchester United U23s yesterday, a move that drew criticism from some Black Cats fans.

The League One side won their EFL Trophy Northern Group F clash 2-1 at the Stadium of Light as a youthful Sunderland team had too much for United’s academy side.

Johnson gave opportunities to many of the North East club’s up-and-coming young players in last night’s game with Hume the only senior player involved – a decision that’s likely to see them fined by the EFL.

The left-back was given the captain’s armband, which proved given how close he came to leaving the club permanently over the summer during contract negotiations.

It did have the backing of Dunne, however, with the QPR defender and former Black Cats player weighing in on Twitter to give Hume his support.

The Verdict

The decision to give Hume the captain’s armband last night made a lot of sense considering the age and experience of the rest of Sunderland’s XI.

Even so, you can understand why it proved controversial among supporters as some will not yet have forgiven him for the contract negotiations in the summer when he appeared to use the threat of his departure as leverage.

He did have the support of Dunne, however, who it appears remains close with the left-back from his loan spell with the Black Cats back in 2019.

It seems Hume still has some way to winning back the Stadium of Light faithful, however.
