A number of clubs are being linked with Joe Morrell as his Portsmouth contract expiring
QPR, Birmingham City and Wrexham are all interested in signing out of contract Portsmouth midfielder Joe Morrell this summer.
That's according to journalist Phil Cadden, who has been providing an update on the future of the 27-year-old.
Morrell has made 105 appearances in all competitions for Pompey, since joining from Luton Town in the summer of 2021. During that time, he has scored one goal and provided ten assists.
However, his future at Fratton Park is now up in the air this summer, and it appears as though that is starting to attract some significant interest from elsewhere in the Football League.
Following Portsmouth's promotion to the Championship as League One champions at the end of last season, the club were left with decisions to make on the futures of a number of players.
One of those is Morrell, whose contract at Fratton Park expired at the end of the 2023/24 campaign.
The club confirmed in their end of season retained list that they had not triggered the option to extend his contract by a further 12 months.
However, they did reveal that they remained in talks with the Wales international about extending his deal.
Even so, it now seems as though the midfielder could still be set to move on from the club this summer.
According to this latest update, QPR, Birmingham and Wrexham are all now taking an interest in the potential signing of Morrell this summer.
Indeed, it is claimed that the 27-year-old is now likely to move on from Portsmouth before the start of next season, after that option in his contract was not taken up.
All three of those clubs to have been credited with an interest in Morrell, are still waiting to make their first signings of the summer transfer window.
QPR will compete alongside Portsmouth in the Championship next season, after finishing 18th, six points clear of the relegation zone in the most recent campaign.
After Birmingham's relegation and Wrexham's promotion last season, both will now go up against each other in League One during the 2024/25 season.
The addition of Morrell could potentially be a good one for any of this particular trio to make this summer.
All three sides have seen central midfielders depart already since the end of the season, following the expiration of their contracts.
As a result, they may well need to add depth to their options in the centre of the park, something they could do with the signing of Morrell.
The 27-year-old has plenty of useful experience in the Football League, and therefore someone many would back to hold their own at this level.
Indeed, his experience of promotion from League One could be particularly helpful for those clubs at that level.
Beyond that, his availability on a free transfer would also help these teams from a financial perspective, as they look to work efficiently in the market.
With the level of interest there is in Morrell also meaning this would be something of a coup, it is a deal that looks to be worth pursuing for the likes of QPR, Birmingham and Wrexham this summer.
