Pundit says he was surprised when Chelsea player started for national team | OneFootball

There was one call that has apparently surprised a football pundit during this latest international break, and it was a call that involved starting a Chelsea player.

England have played two games during this break, one of which they won against Finland on Sunday 3-1, but the other one was going down to a 2-1 defeat at home to Greece. Both games were in the Nations League.

Interim England boss Lee Carsley rang the changes for the latest game yesterday, with a number of players being dropped from Thursday’s game against Greece.

Levi Colwill and Cole Palmer started the last game, but only Palmer managed to get the nod yesterday, with Colwill having to drop down to the bench and getting zero minutes.

Colwill certainly wasn’t poor against Greece and in fact, held his own. Although he would have felt like he should have done more about their second and winning goal. Either way, Carsley made some changes which to be honest, was expected anyway as he would have liked to have taken a look at a few players during this break.

Speaking on BBC Radio Five Live, former player turned pundit Clinton Morrison discussed Carsley’s decision to play Levi Colwill over Marc Guehi against Greece.

And according to Morrison, Guehi should have indeed been given the shout.

“I was more surprised that he didn’t play Marc Guehi at centre-half with Stones because I thought that partnership is the strongest partnership of the two. So I was surprised when Colwill played,” Morrison said.

“I like young Colwill, I think he is good, but I was so surprised that with Guehi and Stones, the partnership they are building, he didn’t play them together.”

Of course, Guehi then got the nod against Finland last night over Colwill.

Colwill has been great for Chelsea this season though and earned his start in my opinion.
