Pundit makes transfer claim involving West Brom and Chelsea | OneFootball

Former West Bromwich Albion player Carlton Palmer has told Football Fan Cast that it was always going to be difficult for his old side to sign Chelsea midfielder Ross Barkley this summer.

As previously reported by The Telegraph’s Matt Law on Twitter, the Baggies were offered the chance to sign the player on loan but it is said that his high wages would have scuppered any real chance of a deal being done between the two clubs.

Barkley has since remained at Stamford Bridge and has mainly been used on the bench by Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel as he struggles ti fit into his manager’s plans after his return from a loan spell with Aston Villa.

Now Palmer has had his say on the speculation involving his old club and Barkley, as he stated the following recently:

“How do West Brom go anywhere near that? He’s reported to be on £110,000 a week.

“They’d have to be helped out by Chelsea an awful lot. I don’t know what’s happened to Ross, really. I mean, he’s a really talented player, but from his burst on the scene, he hasn’t really fulfilled his potential.”

Barkley has made 86 appearances for the Blues since making the move to West London from his boyhood club Everton back in January 2018 and will no doubt be keen to resolve his future at the earliest opportunity.

The 33-cap England international currently has two years remaining on his contract with the Premier League side.

The Verdict

Palmer is absolutely spot on with this as it was never likely that Barkley would make the move to the Midlands this summer due to the finances that would have been involved.

He is a player who has struggled for consistency in recent years and it is clear that he needs to leave Chelsea for the good of his career.

A move to the Sky Bet Championship would have been eye catching to say the least, but it was always going to be an ambitious ploy.

There are sure to be plenty of clubs that are interested in the 27-year-old midfielder when the January transfer window rolls around.
