Pundit and former Red Michael Owen believes that Liverpool are still the best team in Europe, despite going out of the Champions League to Atletico Madrid last night.
The Spanish giants were second best for large parts at Anfield last night, but they came from 2-0 down to win 3-2, progressing to the quarter-final stage of the Champions League 4-2 on aggregate.
Despite the events that occurred last night, Owen still believes that Liverpool are the best team in Europe.
Owen told BT Sport, as quoted by the Liverpool Echo: “There’s no question whatsoever that every single big team around Europe has just breathed a huge sigh of relief, Liverpool are out, and I’ve got no doubts that they are the best team in Europe at the moment.
“Yes, they’ve been beaten over two legs but they are still the best team in Europe and they were absolutely outstanding for 90 minutes.
“As Rio [Ferdinand] said, the difference between the two sides was the goalkeepers.”
It is a big call, but Owen does make a fair point. Any side with the ambition of winning the Champions League will be delighted that Liverpool are out of the competition.
The Reds were quite unfortunate to come up against Atletico Madrid. They were about the only side that could knock Liverpool out of the competition due to the way they play.
However, it is far from the end of the world, as the Reds only need two more victories to secure the Premier League title.
