Manchester City academy coach Brian Barry-Murphy has emerged on the QPR radar as they continue their search for Mick Beale’s successor.

As per a report from the Daily Mail, the R’s have Manchester City’s Elite Development squad manager on a list of candidates who they believe can advance the progress that was made under Beale.

Barry-Murphy has been in the hot seat before in the EFL, with the 44-year-old managing Rochdale for two years before resigning in the summer of 2021.

Asked if he could see similarities in the situation of Beale when he first walked in, and if he sees Barry-Murphy as a good candidate for the vacancy at Loftus Road, Carlton Palmer told Football League World: “No, not really. Beale hadn’t managed before.

Brian has managed and it wasn’t very successful. I think Les (Ferdinand) would be happy with the way that he’s got the under 23’s playing at Man City. The style of football he plays, he’s showing shows he can work with the youngsters, but then you have to look back at his track record as a manager, and it’s not a standout record.

“So again, I think he’s further down the chain but I could be wrong. I mean, the Bookies never really are a million miles away and they have Neil Critchley as the outstanding candidate.”

The verdict

Barry-Murphy has certainly displayed positive early signs in the infancy of his coaching career but it is hard to argue that this would be a massive leap for him.

Expectations will be very high after a good start to the campaign, although the appointment of Beale came with an element of risk.

As Palmer says, it is likely that Barry-Murphy is further down the pecking order when it comes to the candidates QPR are set to speak to.

It is an extremely important decision for QPR’s hierarchy to make, with this season still having the potential of being a productive one.
