Frank McAvennie claims Jose Mourinho’s sacking can’t have been a results-based decision by Tottenham – despite what the club say.

The former Celtic and West Ham striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insists the recent announcement of a European Super League played a role in the decision to sack Mourinho.

Mourinho, 58, was relieved of his duties by Spurs on Monday morning following Friday night’s 2-2 draw with Everton.

This came just hours after the club announced the intention to form a new European Super League with the rest of the Premier League’s ‘big six’ and other top European clubs.

McAvennie, who has high-profile friends at the top of football, claims his sources have said this announcement played a role in Mourinho’s departure.

“I’ve been told that Mourinho’s sacking had something to do with the new Super League,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“Obviously we can’t confirm that but Tottenham saying that it was a purely results-based decision is nonsense.

“The week going into a cup final? No chance. No chance you sack anyone. Jose will have told [Daniel] Levy that this is all a load of nonsense and Levy wouldn’t have that.

“He wants money, if it’s going to happen he wants it to happen. Mourinho knows the fans are the lifeblood of the game.

“I’m telling you, if there’s one person who can find a way to beat Man City in a cup final, it’s Mourinho. I don’t understand the logic, something else must’ve happened.”

Spurs travel to Wembley to face Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final this weekend as the controversy around the newly formed Super League continues to dominate headlines.

On Tuesday morning Tottenham confirmed that Ryan Mason will take over as interim first team head coach for the rest of the season.
