Former Juventus and Napoli defender Ciro Ferrara believes that AC Milan sorely missed Fikayo Tomori as he criticised Alessio Romagnoli’s performance in the defeat to Sassuolo.

Milan suffered their first home league defeat of the season as they were beaten 3-1 by Sassuolo at San Siro on Sunday afternoon. Romagnoli gave the hosts the lead with a header from a corner, but Gianluca Scamacca levelled and a Simon Kjaer own-goal, gave them the lead while Domenico Berardi’s second half goal essentially killed the game before Romagnoli saw red.

It marks the first time that Milan have conceded 7 goals or more in two consecutive league games since March 1998, when they lost 0-3 against Inter and 1-4 against Juventus. Ferrara spoke at DAZN after the game and highlighted the importance of Tomori’s absence, with his comments relayed by MilanNews.

“Tomori is certainly an important player, but let’s talk about Romagnoli anyway. Beyond today’s mistakes, he remains an excellent player,” he said.

“Tomori is an important player, but here the game must be analysed under the aspect of attention more than anything else. Then it is clear that there have been gross errors, we must ask ourselves why they were made.”

Milan really must get their defensive resilience back, because conceding three at home after having Fiorentina put four past them last weekend is certainly not a good sign.
