Darren Bent has tipped super-quick Davinson Sanchez to get the nod over Joe Rodon for Tottenham to combat Chelsea’s slick attackers.
The former Spurs and England striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, believes the Colombian has the pace and experience to cope with the Blues’ dynamic forward line.
The 24-year-old old started Tottenham’s 4-0 win over Ludogorets on Thursday, with Wales international Rodon ineligible for the Lilywhites’ European fixtures and Toby Alderweireld out injured.
However, as quoted by Football.London, Jose Mourinho revealed he thought the 23-year-old was ready to make his first Premier League start and insisted the pair of defenders were both in contention to play.
With Eric Dier looking like one of the first names on the team sheet at the heart of the defence, Bent has suggested Sanchez will get the nod over his teammate to partner the England international in Alderweireld’s absence.
“When I look at the way Chelsea play with the front players and the speed, you start thinking, well, maybe Davinson Sanchez might be better because he’s got that turn of pace,” Bent told Football Insider.
“Davinson Sanchez is probably the better option right now, but moving forward it will be Rodon.
“I think looking at the way Chelsea move forward, with the speed, I’d probably be reluctant to chuck Rodon in. Straightaway, it’s not the easiest game to come into.”
Sanchez has not been included in any of Spurs’ last four Premier League fixtures despite having started four of the Lilywhites’ opening five top-flight games this season.
Rodon meanwhile has just nine minutes of game time under his belt since swapping Swansea for north London over the summer.
