Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum may have already agreed to join a new club, according to Kevin Phillips.
The 2000 European Golden Shoe winner, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, suspects “something has been done in the background” that will be announced in January.
The Athletic‘s James Pearce revealed on Friday that the club were “resigned” to the 30-year-old leaving the club on a free next summer when his current contract expires.
Football Insider understands that Wijnaldum has rejected a contract offer from the Merseyside club but will remain at Anfield until the completion of the 2020/21 campaign.
Despite his Liverpool career seemingly drawing to a close, Wijnaldum remains a key figure in Jurgen Klopp’s side and has already started 10 games this season.
When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of the Netherlands international’s future, Phillips said: “It would not surprise me if something has already been agreed.
“Legally it cannot be made public but it would not surprise me if something has been done in the background.
“I am reading that he has turned down a lucrative new deal so there must be something in the pipeline.
“It would not surprise me if he signs a pre-contract in January or if he leaves in January.
“It is a shame for Jurgen Klopp because Wijnaldum has been a top player for Liverpool. It is another issue that Klopp needs to deal with come the new year.”
