Marcelo Bielsa will “already” have a couple of players he is trying to bring to Leeds United in January.

That is according to ex-Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about what the Argentine manager is planning to reinforce his leaky backline.

Leeds kept a clean sheet in a dominant display in last weekend’s goalless draw against Arsenal but have shed 17 goals in their nine Premier League matches this season.

Only Fulham and West Brom (18 apiece), who are both in the relegation zone, have a worse defensive record than Leeds.

This comes after the Yorkshire giants spent over £30million on two centre-backs – Robin Koch and Diego Llorente – in the last transfer window.

Leeds did try to convert Ben White’s loan into a permanent deal but three bids rising to £30m were knocked back by Brighton.

Asked by Football Insider if the failure to sign White was a major blow, Agbonlahor said:

“Yeah, it was a blow, but I do like Liam Cooper. They’re a similar sort of defender, got good quality but it just shows how good Ben White is. “I don’t blame Brighton, if that was any other club, they’d be like: ‘You’re not having our player, he’s ours, he’s done well and we’re having him back.’

“So it was a blow but Bielsa looks like a guy who’s ready, I’m sure he’ll already have players, one or two players, that he will be trying to sign in January.

“You look him on the pitch, you can see him look at his whole team, he’ll know exactly what areas they’ve got strengthen in, and you can tell you that he’s wants Leeds to be a top team.

“He’s not going to want them just to be in the Premier League and stay in there, so I’m sure he’ll bring in the right defenders to take Leeds to the next level.”
