Everton fans might never see the best of Andre Gomes again if he does not play regularly under Carlo Ancelotti, according to Michael Brown.

The former Premier League midfielder, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, admitted the Portuguese star may have lost some pace and agility in the middle of the park after his injury problems over the last 12 months.

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo, the 27-year-old confessed he was still trying to get back to 100 per cent after his serious injury layoff and revealed he had struggled with a number of niggles during his recovery after lockdown.

Gomes was ruled out for just under four months last season after he suffered a fractured dislocation to his right ankle but finished the campaign back among the starting XI.

Having seen the 29-cap international slip down the pecking order under Ancelotti this term, Brown has admitted supporters may not see the “10 out of 10” performances they have done in the past.

Asked if we would ever see the best of Gomes again, Brown told Football Insider: “He’s going need regular football, we know that but I think was such a bad injury you sort of take your time to come back.

“The adrenaline gets you through your first few when you’re a little bit rusty, get you back with game time, and then maybe there is a slight plateau, there might be a case of other the players coming in.

“You might not get to the level, you might just be a little bit slower, a little bit difference in how your balance and agility, it can slightly change when you’ve had a bad injury. It can affect you for some time and you might never be that 10 out of 10 you were before,

“It’s hard, but I think he’s come back and done well from the injury he’s had but ultimately Everton are trying to get better players all over the pitch, get good signings in, the manager’s mixing it up and that’s what we’re seeing.”
