Celtic would be “very lucky” if they recoup the money they spent as Patryk Klimala closes in on a move to New York Red Bulls.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Aberdeen hitman suggested the Hoops would be delighted not to make a loss on the Polish striker.

Speaking at his press conference on Friday, John Kennedy confirmed the 22-year-old is days away from completing his move to the MLS.

The interim boss called the move a “good deal” for both parties.

The Scottish Sun claim the deal could be worth more than the £3.5million Celtic spent on his capture in 2019.

Klimala started just three league games in 23 appearances this season.

He looks set to leave after scoring just three goals in 28 games for the Hoops.

Whelan admitted the Bhoys could consider themselves fortunate to break even on his departure.

He cited Sebastien Haller’s £20million move from West Ham to Ajax, which lost the Irons £25million, as an example of how badly deals could go.

“If you look at (Sebastien) Haller’s transfer from West Ham, how much did they lose on him, £20million?” Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.

“He played and did okay. Not great, but he did okay, Haller, and they lost £20million.

“For someone who’s hardly featured, to recoup the £3.5million that you paid? That’s either very good business by the board or stupidity from the people that are buying him.

“They could have got him for cheaper probably but Celtic will not complain. Surplus to requirements, no club wants to lose money on a player.

“So, all in all, I think they would probably think themselves very lucky in that position that recoups everything that they paid.”
