AC Milan ended their season with a 3-3 draw against Salernitana and although the result was far from ideal, it was secondary on the night. Still, emotional farewells aside, there are some stats we can take from the game as well.

Milan were hoping to clinch a win after the disappointing defeat against Torino, but instead the game finished 3-3 after sloppy defending. The latter has been a constant this season and the Rossoneri have themselves to blame in many ways.

There were some positive stats from yesterday’s game too, though, so let’s take a look at the key stats and facts from the game.

Deserved more than one point

Taking a look at the stats below, it’s clear that Milan dominated most of the affair and arguably should have come away with all three points. They had several chances to score more and the sloppy defending really cost them dearly in the end.

The narrow offside on Theo Hernandez’s goal is one example, the brilliant save on Matteo Gabbia’s header is another. In short, Milan should have ended Pioli’s tenure with three points and they know it, even if the result was secondary.

Defensive woes confirmed by dire tally

Yesterday’s game, as already mentioned, highlighted Milan’s main issue of this season: collective defensive breakdowns. We wrote prior to the game that the Rossoneri had conceded 46 goals in this Serie A campaign, approaching the levels of 2013-14 and 14-15.

However, we didn’t expect Milan to actually match the record in 2013-14 (49 goals conceded). It gets even worse when you consider that in the 21st century, the Rossoneri have never conceded as many goals as in each of these three seasons.

The new manager will have to make this his priority, as outscoring the opponent just isn’t a good tactic. This season’s tally is also a pretty good example of why it was right to part ways with Pioli.

Pulisic the first since Kaka

Christian Pulisic had a very good game last night, given a 7/10 in our player ratings, and he managed to bag an assist with a lovely cross for Davide Calabria. Thanks to this assist, he became the first midfielder since Ricky Kaka to be involved in at least 20 goals in a single Serie A season.

The American finished his season with 12 goals and 8 assists, certainly proving that Milan made the right decision to sign him for €20m in the summer. Indeed, it was a bargain and Pulisic is expected to play a key role next season as well.
