Christian Pulisic has often been the guy for AC Milan and America in the past 18 months, and after the USA’s loss to Canada, the winger was quite open about his emotions.
When Pulisic arrived in Milano, many were expecting the winger to play a bit-part role for the club as Samuel Chukwueze had joined earlier. However, this was not the case. Instead, the American quickly became a mainstay.
Now, 18 months on, the attacker is at the heart of Milan. When he plays well, the Rossoneri normally follow, and vice versa.
No longer are the Rossoneri built on the performances of Rafael Leao and Theo Hernandez solely. Instead, the weight has fallen on new shoulders, and Pulisic has often delivered.
It is not a role that he is unfamiliar with, considering his time with the American National Team has often been the same, and after the loss to Canada, the attacker spoke to CBS about his role.
Christian, it’s been a disappointing week, how’s the group?
“I mean, obviously, disappointed. We’ll go talk now. We have to come back from this, we’re not at our best at the moment.”
How do you get back to the best? Is it attitude? Tactics?
“All we can do is be an example at our clubs every day, be an example, that is how the National Team is. When we come back, some things need to change, of course. We need to improve.
“We’re going to come back, and I don’t have all the answers [on how to solve things] at the moment.”
How is the energy within the group right now, especially looking ahead to the Gold Cup…
“We’ll see when it comes around, who can be there. Obviously, the feeling is not good right now, we need to turn it around and we can hopefully build some momentum this summer, we need it, especially with big tournaments coming around.”
You are the ‘perfect 10’ for Pochettino, how do you feel in that role?
“I like it, I like playing in that role a lot. The past two games, I’ve not seen as much of the ball as I’d like so it can be tough at times. I feel comfortable there though.”
Today you captained the team, how does that feel? What are the responsibilities?
“This team is everything to me, I care so much for this team, for this country. I hope people know that about me. It is truly an hour to lead this country, it means a lot to me.”
