Christian Pulisic has admitted that he does not know why AC Milan are doing better in Europe than domestically, while he responded to Fabio Cannavaro’s comments.

Milan’s final game in the first phase of the Champions League comes with a rather simple task at hand. They know that three points – following last week’s win over Girona, which resulted in a climb to sixth in the table – would secure a top eight spot.

In the process, the Rossoneri would get direct qualification for the last 16 of the competition, avoiding a potentially tricky two-legged play-off tie next month, given some of the teams currently in the middle 16 places.

Dinamo Zagreb are the opponents and they are having a strange season, with eight points on the board in the UCL – meaning they can still get into the knockout round – but struggling domestically. Fabio Cannavaro is their third coach of the season, and they sit third in the HNL.

Pulisic spoke alongside the head coach Sergio Conceicao in the press conference room at the Stadion Maksimir to preview the game on the eve. His comments were relayed by MilanNews.

“We did well in the Champions League, I don’t know why we win more in Europe than in the league. We have a great opportunity tomorrow to get into the top eight.”

What are Milan missing at the moment?

“It’s hard to say exactly. I think that in the last few games we’ve shown a spirit that’s always towards the end: we want to show it at the start too. I don’t know what’s missing the most.”

Since the league isn’t going very well, can this Milan win the Champions League?

“That’s not how we think. Since we don’t play well in the league then we only focus on the Champions League… We have to focus on every match and hope to do well in the league too.”

Leao said that playing on the left under Conceicao is hell. You play on the right and left, how do you feel?

“What can I say (laughs). He has a strong voice… (laughs).”

Cannavaro said he saw no differences between Fonseca and Conceicao, what are the changes in the way you play and train?

“It’s not easy, because we don’t have time to train and we play every three days. The spirit has changed a bit, we have this mentality that the game is never over but it’s difficult to see the differences because we don’t have much time.”
