Wednesday evening’s Puchar Polski last-sixteen match between Sandecja Nowy Sącz and Śląsk Wrocław was abandoned during the penalty shootout, after alleged racist chanting by Śląsk supporters.

Having missed Sandecja’s third spot kick, 27-year-old midfielder Elhadji Maissa Fall was the target of the vile chanting by the visiting support. Within minutes, the home team had left the field in Solidarity with their Senegalese teammate.

By deviating from the situation on the pitch, we showed that we are a team and we all supported Maissa Fall“, said Sandecja coach Stanislav Varga in his post-match press conference.  “The whole world is fighting racism, there are banners, posters, and still we see such indecent behavior.Śląsk coach Ivan Djurdjević refused to comment on the incident.

During the game, I Liga side Sandecja had twice drawn level against their Ekstraklasa guests – the second time in the 5th minute of added time, at the end of extra time – in order to send the game to a shootout.

The PZPN is yet to comment on the incident, and what steps will follow.
