Bild reports that PSV Eindhoven have increased their offer for Borussia Mönchengladbach defender Ko Itakura as they look to lure him to the Netherlands.
PSV had initially offered €12.5m for Itakura but that was quickly rejected by Gladbach. The Dutch side have now increased their offer to €15m plus bonuses for the 27-year-old. For Gladbach, if PSV keep raising their offers it gets to a point where the club will have to sell. Itakura had a release clause in his contract earlier in the window that was worth €15m.
Itakura has given PSV positive signals about a potential move across the border. A move to PSV would give Itkaura the chance to play in the Champions League this season.
The interest in the Japanese international was confirmed by Gladbach sporting director Roland Virkus:
“It is true that there is interest. Of course, a player like Ko arouses desires at many clubs. But we do not want to give up a defender, we want to get another one.”
Gladbach still wants to bring in one more defender but if Itakura leaves then they will need to bring in another one. Gent’s Jordan Torunarigha and Bochum’s Bernardo are targets, while David Affengruber formerly of Sturm Graz was an option before joining Spanish second division side Elche on a free transfer.
