PSG’s defensive crisis deepens with Danilo now sidelined

Paris Saint-Germain’s defensive options continue to be depleted. PSG have been without Presnel Kimpembe for over a year, without Mlan Skriniar since the start of January and without Marquinhos for a fortnight. For the trip to face AS Monaco on Friday, Les Parisiens will now be without Danilo Pereira.

Both Kimpembe and Skriniar are working their way back from significant injuries. The former has required surgical interventions on his achilles tendon injury, whilst the latter also underwent surgery on an ankle injury at the start of the year. Both are hoping to compete before the end of the season, but their returns are not imminent.

Within this context, Marquinhos’ absence is a big blow. The Brazilian suffered a calf injury against FC Nantes. He is nearing a return, but ahead of Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League encounter against Real Sociedad, he has been rested. PSG are now without Danilo too.

The Portuguese centre-back has suffered a thigh injury in the final session ahead of Friday’s match against the Principality club. He has therefore been left out of the travelling squad and will now undergo further tests to ascertain his period of absence.

Luis Enrique short of defensive options

Lucas Beraldo is now the only recognised, out-and-out centre-back in the squad. The inexperienced Brazilian, who only joined PSG in January, could be partnered by left-back Lucas Hernandez at the heart of the defence. Nordi Mukiele may then come in at left-back.

Alternatively, a Ligue 1 debut could be handed to 17-year-old Joane Gadou, who has been included in a Ligue 1 matchday squad for the first time following news of Danilo’s injury. Either way, Luis Enrique is not exactly blessed with choice.
