The match between PSG and Montpellier, due to take place on Saturday in Paris, has been postponed.

The move was requested by the French police following the eruption of violence across the city over the previous few days.

“Following a request from the Prefecture of Police, the LFP has postponed the match between Paris Saint-Germain and Montpellier HSC,” read a statement released by the French league (LFP) on Tuesday.

“The Commission of Competitions of the LFP will fix another date for the match.”

PSG – who are away at Strasbourg on Wednesday – will perhaps be glad of the rest ahead of next week’s crucial Champions League clash with Red Star Belgrade.

Neymar was expected to miss the game against Montpellier with the injury he sustained in Friday’s 2-2 draw with Bordeaux, but there is now a good chance the Brazilian will be fit for the re-arranged fixture.

Last weekend’s riots in Paris saw the French capital’s worst outbreak of violence in over a decade and the government are currently considering declaring a state of emergency after the protesting spread to other parts of the country.

The situation has been dubbed the ‘gilet jaune’ movement – a reference to the fluorescent vests which legally must be kept in all French vehicles – and began as a protest against a government initiative to hike tax on diesel prices but has now become more about president Emmanuel Macron’s and unpopular austerity measures.
