New PSG signing Lucas Hernandez has admitted that previous comments he made about the Paris club’s Classique rivals, Marseille, were unfortunate during an interview with L’Équipe.

Upon hearing the news of the left-back’s impending arrival at the Parc des Princes, the leader of the CUP, PSG’s main ultra group, Romain Mabille, posted an angry message on Instagram, stating that Hernandez was “not welcome” and that fans would “let him know” of their displeasure, citing the player’s Marseille roots.

Fans were also reportedly upset over the exuberance with which Hernandez and his Bayern Munich teammates celebrated their 2020 Champions League final win over PSG, seemingly poking fun at Paris as Marseille remains the only French club to win the European Cup and often enjoys reminding PSG of the fact.

The 27-year-old Hernandez, who has yet to play a competitive game since a knee injury playing for France at last year’s World Cup, sought to reassure Paris fans of his commitment, describing that criticism as “not fun” but admitted his remarks about OM and suggesting he would never play for PSG were “clumsy.”

Hernandez, whose father was a Marseille player, continued: “I want to show all the sceptical PSG supporters that I’m here to give my all for the club and this jersey. They will see it very soon. I’m very competitive, and from my first match, I will give everything for the shirt… I was born in Marseille, it’s true, but I can’t help that… My only memory of them is when I beat OM with Atlético Madrid in the Europa League final. Apart from that, I have nothing that connects me to the city, and no member of my family lives there.”
