PSG Seen as Alternative for Disgruntled Newcastle Star Amid £130M Liverpool Chase

PSG have been playing consistently without a prototypical No. 9 in their starting 11 since last season. As a result, should the Parisians be in the mix for disgruntled Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak, who appear to want out?

The capital club have Gonçalo Ramos, who hasn’t locked down that striker job under Enrique. Moreover, the Portugal international has been linked to the Magpies as a potential target should they decide to give in and sell Isak.

Liverpool look like the top destination for Isak, with Fabrizio Romano reporting a £130 million bid soon arriving. Nonetheless, other clubs can sometimes sway players away with lucrative offers, which makes hijacks possible even at the last moment.

Therefore, the key question remains: Can PSG convince the Sweden international striker to change course and leave for Paris?

On the latest Ensemble PSG Podcast, Robin Bairner, chief editor at Football Transfers, weighed in on whether PSG should be putting themselves on Isak’s radar.

“It’s unlikely, but funny things happen in the last week of the transfer window, and particularly when you’ve got a player like Alexander Isak, who’s clearly not happy with Newcastle,” Bairner said. “PSG might not have come onto his radar, as I don’t want to say an attractive option because obviously, the European champions, there’s going to be some degree of attraction. They are such a strong team, but I don’t think they would have been his No. 1 option.

“But like you say, if he’s fallen out with Newcastle so significantly that the damage is irreparable, Liverpool can’t get a deal over the line, then you know you are looking at a handful of clubs that could possibly sign him. And PSG undoubtedly fall into that small bracket of teams that can sign him.”

Alexander Isak would be an upgrade for PSG

Moreover, Bairner revealed the characteristics that Isak has that would allow him to slide into the No. 9 role and be a more effective striker than, say, what Ramos is.

“Luis Enrique, we know, is not necessarily a coach that likes to play with a center forward,” Bairner added. “You mentioned in your piece—I think you bring up Gonçalo Ramos in the situation there—and Luis Enrique is reticent to play Ramos. But I think Isak’s a bit more of an all-around player.

“He is obviously a number nine, and he’s very much a center forward, but there’s so much to his game. He can bring other players into the match. He is a very, he’s technically very strong, so you would imagine he could fit into this PSG team, and would also clearly add a different dimension to the team. He would certainly add a goal-scoring dimension.”
