The future of Lionel Messi will be decided after the 2022 FIFA World Cup, as the 35-year-old’s contract expires in June 2023.

After a rough first 2021-22 campaign in the French capital, the veteran forward has had a bounceback season with Paris Saint-Germain. As a result, the Ligue 1 side doesn’t want to party ways too quickly after two years.

In an interview with Sky Sports (h/t Ole), PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi stated that he’s confident that Leo will choose to stay at the club for a while longer.

“He is very happy; it shows with the National Team,” Al-Khelaifi stated. “If a player is not happy you will see that his performance is not good for the national team. This season he performed fantastically with us; he scored many goals and gave many assists for Argentina and for our club.”

Messi likely has three options heading into free agency as remaining at PSG is an option, but there’s also a return to the Camp Nou and Barcelona. The Spanish club has discussed a possible return of their idol after he left over a year ago through the backdoor.

The Argentine can also say goodbye to Europe and head to South Florida, as Inter Miami has been the club linked to Messi should the PSG star decide to go against an MLS side.
