Paris Saint-Germain have announced the appointment of Christophe Galtier as the club’s new head coach, reportedly paying OGC Nice a €10m fee to release him from his contract.

The 55-year-old replaces Mauricio Pochettino, who was relieved of his duties earlier on Tuesday.

Having been heavily linked with another big appointment name in Zinedine Zidane, the Ligue 1 champions have instead looked to a coach who has spent his entire managerial career within French football. Four of PSG’s previous five managerial appointments since the QSI takeover in 2011 have been managers with no prior experience in the country.

There is a clear change of approach in handing Galtier the job, with the 55-year-old previously spending eight years at Saint-Étienne, four years with Lille, and the 2021/22 campaign in charge of OGC Nice.

A former defender, Galtier led Lille to a shock Ligue 1 title in 2020/21, pipping PSG by a single point.

Last season saw him lead Nice to a Coupe de France final and a fifth-place finish in Ligue 1, an impressive jump from ninth the season before.

Galtier has also been named Ligue 1 Manager of the Season three times, in 2013, 2019 and 2021.
