The second legs of the Champions League round of 16 took place on Tuesday evening with a pair of mouthwatering ties.
Here’s how it all unfolded.
Scorers: Kane 38′, Muller 45+2′, Kane 66′
Bayern Munich needed to overturn a 1-0 deficit from the first leg when they welcomed Lazio to the Allianz Arena for the second leg.
They began the game on the front foot, with Leroy Sane seeing his effort saved and Jamal Musiala seeing his shot blocked in the opening stages.
The Italian side always remained a threat on the counter attack and offered plenty of attacking promise in the early minutes, but the German champions continued to probe, with Musiala seeing a second effort saved and some last ditch defending keeping the ball out of the Lazio net.
At the other end, Ciro Immobile headed wide when well placed. And where one striker missed, the other made no mistake as moments later Harry Kane found half a yard to head past Provodel and level the tie. They could have doubled their lead on the night, and move ahead on aggregate, moments later only for Musiala to fire wide when well placed.
Their pressure eventually told though, and a fierce Matthijs de Ligt volley was superbly turned home on the stroke of half-time by German veteran Thomas Muller to hand Bayern the initiative in the tie.
The second half saw Bayern control the game, and Lazio looked increasingly defeated despite the slender deficit. That fear became reality just after the hour mark when Leroy Sane’s effort was palmed into the path of Kane, who made no mistake to put his side two goals up in the tie.
The German side kept coming. Thomas Muller hit the post before Musiala fired over, but they could not add to their 3 goals on the night. Ultimately though, it didn’t matter. Lazio couldn’t find a way past the Bavarians, and Thomas Tuchel’s side marched into the quarter finals of the competition.
Scorers: Mbappé 16′, 56′; Merino 89′
PSG held a commanding 2-0 lead from the first leg when they travelled to San Sebastián to take on Real Sociedad and never truly looked in any danger of crashing out of the competition against the Spanish outfit.
Though the focus was on the return of Kylian Mbappe, it was the hosts that had the better early chances, with Takefuso Kubo left feeling that he should have done better with a cross that eluded the makeshift PSG backline.
PSG continued to try and extend their advantage in the tie, and Bradley Barcola saw his effort from six yards out saved after some excellent work from Kylian Mbappé on the left hand-side.
Mbappé wasn’t going to be kept out of the headlines for long though, and the Frenchman opened the scoring after a quarter of an hour when he fired past Alex Remiro with such power that a brief break was needed to fix the netting.
He almost added a second from a Barcola cutback, only to be denied by a great save from Alex Remiro as the French side continued to outclass their opponents in the opening half hour. La Reale offered little going forwards, and it seemed far more likely that PSG would double their lead before half time than the home side finding a way back into the tie.
And come the second half that is exactly what they did, with Mbappé beating the Sociedad high line to run in behind before producing a thumping finish into the near post and ensure his side’s spot in the last 8.
Real Sociedad belatedly had the ball in the net, only for the offside flag to deny them a consolation goal. Too late, they began to show some intent as they went close on several occasions, but with the tie already firmly out of sight.
With a minute to go, the hosts did finally open their account after some sustained pressure, with Mikel Merino firing in from 8 yards to make the scoreline somewhat more respectable. Ultimately though, it was far too little too late, and PSG waltzed into the last-8 of the competition.
