A season that promised so much at Paris Saint-Germain ultimately fell well below expectations.
It was Neymar’s sophomore campaign at the Parc des Princes and the first under new coach Thomas Tuchel.
While Ligue 1 was retained with ease, it was the same old story in Europe and their domestic cup displays were disappointing.
Here’s what we made of their season.
This is supposed to be Neymar’s team, right? Nobody told the young prodigy.
At the age of 20, he is threatening to eclipse the Brazilian thanks to the kind of performances he displayed last season.
He followed up a World Cup-winning summer with 37 goals and 12 assists in all competitions. Phenomenal.
Came into the season as a World Cup winner but didn’t justify the enhanced reputation that comes with that tag.
His focus and commitment was lacking, his attitude was criticised by team-mates (notably Neymar) and he simply committed too many errors for a PSG centre-back.
While a recurring thigh problem may have been a reason for it, he certainly didn’t live up to expectations.
Tuchel had a strong start to life in the French capital and while things didn’t quite sour, there is a more bitter taste in the mouth.
He is well liked among the players and has done a good job of managing a dressing room overflowing with egos.
The Manchester United result and end of the season were both disappointing, in terms of results and performance.
Delivering the Ligue 1 title was the bare minimum and he achieved that but much more is expected and while there were several key injuries, improvements must be made quickly going forward.
The relationship between Tuchel and sporting director Antero Henrique must be resolved.
There appears to be an ongoing power struggle between the pair for control at the Parc des Princes and a compromise must be reached.
President Nasser Al-Khelaifi appears intent on pleasing everyone and ultimately appeasing nobody.
