PSG has been so dominant in the Ligue 1 since their take over in 2011. With new money at their disposal, they have gone on to win the Ligue 1 7 times in the last 9 years.

The only time they failed to win the league was in the 16/17 season when Monaco won it, and the most recent season when Lille won it.

Yes, PSG is not the defending champions this season, and while this scenario does not occur very often, they are 15 points ahead at this time and appear to be on track to be champions of France again.

PSG’s target is not the Ligue 1 though, since a decade they have been in a relentless pursuit of the Champions League and this season their focus would be on Europe again.

However, they would prefer to keep a quarter of an eye on France after failing to win the league last season and losing 3-1 to Nantes in their most recent match.

PSG needed a win, and they got one against Saint-Etienne on Sunday!

Story of the match

Paris Saint-Germain added three points to their Ligue 1 title push, but they had to come from behind to win 3-1 over Saint-Etienne.

Denis Bouanga stunned the Parc des Princes early on as he hammered a low attempt past Gianluigi Donnarumma after Danilo Pereira gave the ball away. PSG, on the other hand, swiftly regained their poise and swatted their opponents aside.

Lionel Messi put up Kylian Mbappe for PSG’s first two goals, one before and one after halftime. The first occurred when Messi found his strike partner with a usual superb ball before firing through Paul Bernardoni, who should have done better.

After passing through the locker room, Messi set up Mbappe once more, with the striker this time giving Bernardoni no opportunity to save.

Mbappe then switched roles, setting up Danilo for PSG’s third goal with an outside-of-the-shoe ball, allowing the Portuguese midfielder to atone for his previous gaffe.

Late in the game, Messi had a chance to score after Neymar cut it back for him, but the Argentine pulled his shot wide.

In the end, it didn’t matter because the leaders won 3-1, putting them 15 points ahead of Marseille.

Standout points

Mbappe’s two goals saw him join former PSG striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the all-time PSG goal-scoring records, as he drew level on 156 goals.

Mbappe is now only behind Cavani when it comes to scoring goals for Paris.

We all know how brilliant Mbappe has been this season, but there have been doubts over Lionel Messi’s time at PSG.

Well, he grabbed two spectacular assists, bringing his season total to 10 assists. This now means he is leading the assists chart for Ligue 1.

He may not be scoring as many goals, but he is still playing the most beautiful football a footballer can play and providing assists!

Lionel Messi is the greatest playmaker, still.
