Machida Zelvia's remarkable season continues as they travel to Panasonic Stadium Suita on Wednesday evening to face a Gamba Osaka side struggling for consistency in the J1 League.
The visitors currently sit second in the table after an impressive start to the campaign, while Gamba occupy 11th place as they look to find form under manager Daniel Poyatos.
Machida Zelvia arrive in Osaka having lost just once in their last five matches, collecting 10 points from a possible 15. Their recent 2-2 draw at Avispa Fukuoka demonstrated both their attacking threat and defensive resilience, qualities that have propelled them to the upper echelons of the table.
Gamba's form has been decidedly mixed, with two wins, two defeats and a draw from their last five outings. Their most recent fixture saw them share six goals in a thrilling 3-3 draw with Albirex Niigata, highlighting both their attacking potential and defensive frailties.
Gamba Osaka will be without forward Welton Felipe, who is sidelined with a ligament injury to his right ankle. There are also concerns over Makoto Mitsuta's mindset following his involvement in a minor traffic accident on March 31, though the player escaped uninjured.
Machida Zelvia face defensive headaches with centre-backs Daihachi Okamura and Ryuho Kikuchi both nursing thigh injuries. Yuta Nakayama is also doubtful with a knee problem, potentially forcing manager Go Kuroda into defensive reshuffles.
The contest between Gamba's experienced midfielder Shu Kurata, who has netted twice in six appearances this season, and Machida's in-form forward Takuma Nishimura (three goals in seven games) could prove decisive.
Another intriguing subplot involves goalkeeper Kosei Tani, who has represented both clubs this season following a January transfer merry-go-round that saw him move between the teams.
Gamba are likely to deploy their favoured 4-2-3-1 formation with Issam Jebali leading the line. With Mitsuta potentially distracted, Juan Alano's creativity from wide areas will be crucial to their attacking threat.
Machida have typically lined up in a 4-4-2 system with the prolific partnership of Nishimura and Oh Se-hun supported by the creative Yuki Soma, who has already provided three assists this campaign. However, their defensive injuries may force Kuroda to adapt his approach.
The visitors have been gradually evolving their style under Kuroda, moving away from direct play towards a more possession-based approach, though injuries have occasionally forced them to revert to more pragmatic tactics.
Gamba's home advantage should count for something, but Machida's superior form and attacking threat make them slight favourites despite their defensive concerns. Expect an entertaining contest with both teams finding the net.
Predicted Score: Gamba Osaka 1-2 Machida Zelvia
