According to a recent report by Zero Hora (translated by Sport Witness), Gremio midfielder Diego Rosa is prepared to pen a five-year contract with Manchester City after having his medical with them on Monday. However, the same source has also mentioned that the Brazilian youngster will remain in his homeland for a few more months as he will turn 18 in October which means that he will only be able to complete his move to the Etihad Stadium in January (via Sport Witness).
The 17-year-old has come through the youth ranks of Gremio over the past few years before establishing himself as a member of the Brazilian club’s ‘B’ team. Rosa has caught the eye with his performances back in Brazilian football, but still has a long way to go before he is ready to test himself at the senior level.
The talented youngster is primarily a box to box midfielder, but can also play in a more reserved role as a defensive midfielder if needed. He has represented Brazil at various youth levels and is currently an important member of his country’s Under-17 team.
Rosa has scored two goals in 11 appearances for the Brazilian U-17 side thus far which goes to show just how gifted he is as a midfielder. As long as the Gremio starlet can continue making progress in the coming seasons, he should have a decent shot of becoming a regular feature at the highest level someday.
Rosa can use his quickness to make some driving runs with the ball from midfield. He packs a lot of power with his strikes from long range and is not afraid to get stuck in with a few tackles to earn possession back for his side. The Brazilian possesses a strong upper body that helps him win some 50-50 aerial duels at the centre of the park. He is a composed finisher in the final third as well and has the potential to become a world-class midfielder in the future.
Rosa’s ceiling is sky-high based on his recent performances at various youth levels. However, Man City would need to be patient with his development as he will probably need some time to cope with life in English football.
Pep Guardiola is always looking to build for the future, so recruiting a promising youngster like Rosa fits what he is trying to work towards at the Etihad Stadium in the long-run. The recent emergence of Phil Foden and Tommy Doyle should serve as proof that Guardiola is the ideal man to oversee Rosa’s long-term development. The Brazilian teen sensation is undoubtedly a prospect to look out for in the future as long as he can continue to improve himself with each season.
