Will FC Bayern come away empty-handed in the transfer poker for Xabi Alonso? Club patron Uli Hoeneß is sceptical and expects that the 42-year-old will not leave Bayer Leverkusen in the summer.

Munich would love to sign Xabi Alonso as their new coach, and the Isar club are making no real secret of this. Uli Hoeneß recently publicly confirmed his interest in the Basque. In an interview with BR, the 72-year-old once again made it clear that Alonso is Bayern’s preferred solution: „We would like to sign him. If that doesn’t work out, it will be up to the sporting management to look for and find alternatives.“

„He owes a lot to this club“

Interestingly, Bayern’s honorary president Uli Hoeneß does not rate Munich’s chances in the tug-of-war for the successful coach very highly: „It will be very difficult, not to say probably impossible. If he had had two or three more years of success, it would probably be easier to get rid of him there.“ He therefore expects Alonso to stay in Leverkusen: „I can imagine that, as I have come to know and appreciate him, he is more inclined to stay on there because he doesn’t want to leave it behind.“

From Hoeneß‘ point of view, there are few reasons for Alonso to leave Leverkusen prematurely after this season: „He is now training at a club that is in the process of becoming German champions. He owes a lot to this club, and they owe a lot to him.“

According to Sky, Alonso is leaning towards a move to FC Bayern in the summer should he decide to leave the Werkself. In addition to Munich, Liverpool FC have also expressed an interest in the former professional.

Reports have recently been circulating that Alonso is speculating on a coaching job at Real Madrid and would like to stay with Leverkusen for the time being.
