Eintracht are away to third-tier side Viktoria Köln in the DFB Cup second round on Wednesday, with Dino Toppmöller urging against complacency.
In 2021, TSG Hoffenheim struggled at the Sportpark Höhenberg in the first round, eventually taking the match into extra time before squeezing a 3-2 win. Viktoria also lost in the first round last year, losing 5-0 at the RheinEnergieSTADION to overwhelming favourites Bayern Munich, where Dino Toppmöller was assistant coach at the time.
This season, Viktoria produced a strong first-round performance to beat SV Werder Bremen 3-2, setting up Wednesday’s tie with Eintracht Frankfurt (kick-off 20:45 CET).
Eintracht comfortably eased past Lok Leipzig 7-0 in the first round.
Eintracht head coach Toppmöller has urged his players to be on their guard against a Viktoria side currently in sixth place in the third division after 13 rounds of matches: “We know that Viktoria have some really good players in their ranks and they’ll have a lot of quality out on the pitch. We’ll need to be on our game and fully focused right from the off. I faced Vikoria Köln with Bayern in 2022. They beat Bremen in the first round and are unbeaten at home this season. It’s going to be a real challenge which we’ll need to approach with 100 per cent commitment.”
