Preview: Glasgow Derby to take place at Celtic Park | OneFootball

Celtic and Rangers have been rivals of Glasgow since their founding, and the women’s sides are not different. Celtic Park will host the second Glasgow Derby of the season, heightening the occasion even more.

With the Hoops only five points behind the top two – including Rangers – there’s plenty at stake. Both clubs will be coming off the back of a winning streak, but who’ll obtain the bragging rights to Glasgow? In a press conference, Her Football Hub spoke to Celtic’s Head Coach Fran Alonso ahead of the Glasgow clash.

The hopes of repeating history

Both clubs have invested in their squads to best develop them for games like this. Celtic have brought in names such as Mariah Lee and Jacynta Galabadaarachchi to name a couple.

Rangers brought in goal-machine Kirsty Howat from Glasgow City, so she’ll no doubt be on the watch list. Alonso touched on his first Glasgow Derby and how it felt to come away the winners, as well as his expectations on tomorrow.

“It’s going to be my second Glasgow Derby,” he said. “The first one was unbelievable. I remember the feeling around the team afterwards – the hugs and smiles – I expect a very special game. Hopefully with the same ending as last time – three points for Celtic. I also expect a very good football game, I hope that both teams put on a show.

“We’ve both got some quality players who like to play quality football. The pitch is perfect too. We’re going to be playing – in my opinion – the best stadium in the country. I think it’s going to be a very good day for women’s football and I love the fact that it is live on BBC. Difficult game for us and a difficult game for them.

“If i’m honest, they are stronger than they were. They’ve brought in three Scottish internationals that have a lot of strength. They had a couple weaknesses but have corrected them with their new signings. They are a very good squad and a very experienced squad as well with many players who used to win titles and are used to winning games [at Glasgow City] so they are better than they were. Of course, the fact we were under-dogs last time and are under-dogs again now, doesn’t mean we won’t go there and try impose our game, because we will. Are we good enough to beat them tomorrow? 100%. We believe that, and we will try that.”

The Glasgow Derby will kick off at Celtic Park at 7:35pm UK time and will be available to watch live on BBC Alba.
