Coventry City and Portsmouth go head-to-head at The Coventry Building Society Arena this Wednesday in the EFL Championship. The match will be broadcast live at 20:00 on Sky Sports Football.
Coventry City currently have 59 points and lie in 7th position. Last time out, Frank Lampard's team slipped to a 1-2 defeat against automatic promotion hopefuls Burnley.
Portsmouth, meanwhile, have 45 points to their name this season and sit 17th in the table. Although their home form has been sensational in 2025, the south coast club have struggled away from home and John Mousinho's team suffered a 2-1 reverse at Millwall in their last second tier encounter.
The last meeting between the two teams ended in a 4-1 triumph for Pompey, so the Sky Blues have a debt to settle.
Ross Samuel (Sky Blues Extra): A big game for the Sky Blues this midweek. We find ourselves out of the top six for the first time in a month or so after the weekend's defeat at home to Burnley.
Portsmouth is a more than winnable game and there is pressure to deliver both a performance and a result to try and get back into the play-off spots with the finishing line in sight.
Frank Lampard was sent off after the final whistle for confronting referee James Bell after the defeat to Burnley so he will be in the stands for the visit of Portsmouth on Wednesday.
Our recent defeats have been against inarguably two of the strongest sides in the division and Lampard has admitted that our season won’t be defined by those games.
But it certainly will against sides we should be expecting to beat. We owe Portsmouth one as well after they thumped us 4-1 last year, a game which saw keeper Brad Collins have a nightmare. After his error against Burnley, Collins needs a solid performance.
Freddie Webb (Pompey News Now ): A familiar sinking feeling fell upon Portsmouth fans at The Den after The Blues fell to another late defeat. Millwall deserved their 2-1 victory after being on top for the majority of the match.
Pompey got back into the match through a neat finish by Andre Dozzell, but poor late defending and an inability to defend the penalty box sank them to yet another away defeat. Fears of relegation continue, with The Blues’ dreadful away form a theme of the season which simply won’t go away.
Coventry are a completely different beast under Frank Lampard to when they last played against Portsmouth at Fratton Park. Fast, attacking football and a real ability to create chances has The Sky Blues challenging for a play-off place, with an imperious Jack Rudoni and returning Haji Wright leading the charge.
Pompey will have to bring their defensive solidity at home and actually replicate it away to have any chance. A high press has stifled Coventry in the past, but until The Blues learn how to control matches away from the south coast, the result will be eerily similar to Saturday.
Coventry City: Bradley Collins, Milan van Ewijk, Liam Kitching, Bobby Thomas, Jay Dasilva, Matt Grimes, Jamie Allen, Tatsuhiro Sakamoto, Jack Rudoni, Ephron Mason-Clark, Haji Wright
