Ben Davies reveals life has been turbulent at Tottenham Hotspur since losing the Champions League final in 2019

Speaking to The Athletic (Subscription Required), Ben Davies revealed that life at Tottenham Hotspur has been tough since they lost the UEFA Champions League final to Liverpool in 2019.

The full-back was out of favour under Nuno Espirito Santo but has been given a new lease of life by his successor, Antonio Conte. However, the current period is more of a rebuilding stage and it will take some time before they compete amongst the big boys again.

But not so long ago, Spurs were competing amongst the best in Europe. Mauricio Pochettino had guided Tottenham to three consecutive finishes in the Top 3 and they were optimistic going into European football’s showpiece event in 2019.

However, it was not to be and they could only watch on as Jurgen Klopp’s side sucked the hope out of them. The moment represented the high nadir of Pochettino’s reign and he would leave the club later that year.

Since losing that game, the club has sacked three managers and have not managed to finish in the Top 4. Davies recently opened up on the tumultuous period at the club since losing the all-important final.

“Since then (UCL final), it has been pretty tumultuous. A lot of change in managers, we had COVID, we had the full shebang. Hopefully we’re on the other side of it now.”

Time to move on

Losing such an important game can be hard and what has happened in the past two years has affected most fans too. However, we now have a manager that can not only get us back to that stage but also hopefully win the competition.

Antonio Conte is one of the best managers in the world and his achievements are a testament to that. Appointing him and Fabio Paratici is a statement of intent. The onus is now on our players to get behind them and perform to the best of their capabilities.

Davies has the experience of getting to the final of Europe’s premier competition and needs to lead from the front and motivate the youngsters around him. Only 28, he could make it to yet another final, if everything goes right under Conte.

If it has been done once, it could be done again. We have a fantastic stadium now, great players, and a title-winning manager. Few could ask for more and if Paratici nails the recruitment in the coming transfer windows, the sky is the limit.
