Preston North End are set to revisit their transfer interest in Huddersfield Town star Duane Holmes.

That is according to Alan Nixon via Patreon, who reports that after missing out on the American international midfielder last month, North End plan to get him at their second attempt in the summer.

Nixon’s report states that North End can snap up the midfielder in the summer if the player fancies the move.

Holmes’ current contract at the John Smith’s Stadium expires next summer in 2024, although, Huddersfield Town have an option to extend this by a further year, as per Transfermarkt.

Whether or not they do that may or may not depend on what division the club find themselves in come the end of the campaign, though, with the Terriers in a relegation scrap at present.

Holmes came through the youth ranks at the John Smith’s Stadium, making his first team debut for the club during the 2013/14 campaign.

In the following seasons, a mix of a few appearances for the Terriers and loan deals followed, with Holmes featuring for Yeovil and Bury before making a permanent switch to Scunthorpe in 2016.

After two years and 94 appearances at Glanford Park, Derby County came calling, where Holmes went on to spend three seasons and make 83 appearances.

Since his return to Huddersfield in 2021, the 28-year-old has taken his total appearance tally for the club to 118 and counting, with 26 of those coming in the Championship this season.

The Verdict

This would certainly be an interesting deal for Preston North End, although Huddersfield would surely be reluctant to let him go.

Holmes has been a relative regular in the Terriers side so far this season and one would assume if they stay up, they’d want to keep him around, especially considering they reportedly hold an option to extend his contract further.

From Preston’s perspective, though, they must be very keen if they are set to go back in for him in the summer.

That shows their January interest wasn’t just out of convenience or to plug a gap short term, and that they potentially see him as a real asset for their side moving forward.
