Premiership settles down as Rangers close in on Celtic

When one looks at the league table, for Rangers’ ‘abysmal’ preseason and ‘indifferent’ start to the season, and Celtic’s ‘smooth’ summer followed by ‘nothing but wins’, you’d never think these looking at the pure numbers in the table.

Staggeringly, Rangers have just one less goal, and just that one more (own) goal conceded as the difference between both sides at this early stage.

Yes, there’s two points in it after three matches, and yes, even a single goal means ‘more’ at this point than it will 10+ matches into the season, but the fact is Rangers and Celtic are fairly even for the raw data of numbers on the pitch, even if they have a tonne more cash.

So what does this mean? 56?

Let’s not be silly.

It’s a marathon not a sprint, and the first 3 matches do not deign the winner of the title.

But it means that, as things stand right now, Rangers are not as far behind Celtic for the stuff on the pitch as maybe it felt like we should be.

Rangers rattled Ross County and comfortably finished Motherwell, Celtic have swiftly put away Hibs, Killie and now St Mirren.

The discrepancy was the shambles in Edinburgh for the Famous, which has obviously left us two points behind.

Aside that? It’s not looking as bleak as it did.

True, a 6-0 smashing of County has probably warped perception a little, but we’re football fans, we’re allowed to have optimism based on a good result and performance here and there.

All is to play for next weekend.

Rangers could make a massive statement with a win…

Why the heck not…
