Manchester United were linked with a shock move for free agent Marcos Alonso this summer, but the defender has reached an agreement to join Celta Viga in La Liga.

The former Barcelona and Chelsea left-back spent six seasons at Stamford Bridge, making 212 appearances and scoring 29 goals for the Blues.

Alonso won the Premier League in 2016/17 under Antonio Conte.

For the past two seasons, the 33-year-old played for Barcelona and scored against United when the two teams drew 2-2 in the Europa League in 2023.

Alonso has been a free agent this summer following his exit from Camp Nou.

However, the former Spain international had been linked with a move to Old Trafford, just like he was a year ago before United settled on signing Sergio Reguilon on loan from Tottenham.

The Reds have started the 2024/25 without a starting left-back due to injuries, which led to Alonso being linked with a move to United again. Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia are both ruled out for the foreseeable future.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Celta Vigo have won the race for Alonso – but the journalist also claims that United weren’t in the running for his signature.

In a post shared via X, Romano wrote: “Marcos Alonso to Celta Vigo, here we go! Agreement in place to join the club on free transfer, contract approved.

“It will now depend on Financial Fair Play space to proceed with formal steps for Celta to sign former Barca LB.

“#MUFC never an option despite links.”

United are often linked with players they have no interest in signing.

Alonso’s name has done the rounds for some time, but he is past his best and we need to step away from paying big money to players in their 30s.
