We’ve concluded Matchday 3 of the new Premier League season and players are beginning to hit their stride.

Huge upsets, red cards galore and some wonder goals to boot. But which players stood out the most, you ask? Here’s the Onefootball Premier League team of the weekend.

GK –  Rui Patrício – Wolves

He arrived at Wolves as arguably one of the top five goalkeepers in the world, and his performance against Manchester City on Saturday proved that.

Commanding in the air, competent with his feet and a wonder save from Raheem Sterling topped off his performance. Watch it again and you’ll realise he had no right getting close to that ball.

RB – Héctor Bellerín – Arsenal

Bellerín is a player who has faced criticism from the Arsenal fanbase but his role is already a significant one under Unai Emery.

Under Arsène Wenger, the Gunners’ play showed a strong left side bias, whereas now there is a heavy right-sided influence with Bellerín and Henrikh Mkhitaryan already combining well.

Two assists and a strong offensive performance earn him a place in the side.

CB – Toby Alderweireld – Tottenham

Alderweireld looked set to join Manchester United this summer before Ed Woodward tried to pick a fight with José Mourinho and, boy, will they be regretting that.

The Belgian was monstrous as Tottenham ran riot at Old Trafford, completing the most passes, clearances and interceptions for his side, as well as keeping Romelu Lukaku quiet all night. He is without doubt one of the best centre backs in world football.

CB – Harry Maguire – Leicester

Yes, you saw that right. Harry Maguire scored a last minute winner for Leicester that didn’t involve a set-piece or his forehead.

The Foxes defender just goes from strength to strength, combining solid defending with intelligent ball playing as he claims his title as a truly modern defender.

His performance at Southampton was impressive from first minute to last and Claude Puel is lucky to have him.

LB – Ryan Bertrand – Southampton

One of the most underrated players in the Premier League? Probably.

Southampton look pretty lifeless under Mark Hughes but they can always rely on Bertrand, who is up and down the flank for 90 minutes. His goal – rifled into the top corner – was a strike deserving of more.

CM – Jorginho – Chelsea

Maurizio Sarri’s very own midfield metronome. Jorginho completed 158 passes – 27 more than the whole Newcastle side – at St. James Park and has settled into English football like a duck to water.

His positioning can sometimes leave the back four exposed but it’s clear that Chelsea play better as a side with him as their hub.

CM – James Milner – Liverpool

Naby Keïta? No worries. Fabinho? Light work. James Milner is made for Jürgen Klopp and his performances have echoed that.

His engine is ridiculous, but it’s the consistency at which he completes everything in his game that stands out. Always making the right pass, always knowing when to press, always knowing when to drop.

You can’t help but admire his professionalism which was on show against Brighton at Anfield.

CM – Jean-Michäel Seri – Fulham

Eyebrows were raised when Fulham secured the signing of Seri and he showed his class against Burnley on Saturday.

The Ivorian was a cut above everyone else at Craven Cottage, always at the centre of everything and his goal was an absolute screamer.

You could have put two goalkeepers in the net and they still wouldn’t have saved it.

RF – Lucas Moura – Tottenham

Lucas has endured a mixed start to his Tottenham career, but given responsibility at Old Trafford, he delivered with a clinical performance.

Playing just off Harry Kane he was a constant thorn in the side of Chris Smalling and Phil Jones, running the channels well and causing problems with his direct dribbling.

His first goal was really well taken and his second was ruthlessly tucked away after taking advantage of some more nervous defending. Mauricio Pochettino will be hoping for Moura that.

LF – Roberto Pereyra – Watford

You never know what you’re going to get from Pereyra but he’s started the season brilliantly under Javi Gracia.

Playing from the left, his intelligent play makes Watford tick and after adding goals to his already impressive all-round game can only be a good thing.

Only Abdoulaye Doucouré (11) has been directly involved in more goals for Watford in the Premier League since 2017/18 than Roberto Pereyra (10) and his strike against Crystal Palace was a beauty.

ST – Aleksandar Mitrović – Fulham

Article image:Premier League Team of the Weekend: Matchday 3

Fulham spent a lot of money bringing Mitrović this summer and he looks so much more comfortable under Slaviša Jokanović than Rafa Benítez.

Since his debut for Fulham in February, no player has scored more goals in the top four tiers of English football than he has (15).

He will always cause problems, he will always score goals and if he keeps his head screwed on there is a brilliant striker waiting to explode – as Burnley found out.
