Our Premier League Team of the Weekend returns for gameweek two as we look at the standout performers across the division.
Everton can thank Jordan Pickford for a perfect start to life at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, as the goalkeeper denied Danny Welbeck to keep a clean sheet against Brighton. No other goalie made more saves (four) than him over the weekend.
This will go down as one of Jurrien Timber’s finest performances in an Arsenal shirt. Not only did the Gunners not concede, but their defenders were heavily involved in the attack too.
None more so than the Dutchman, who scored two goals and set up another in a 5-1 win over Leeds United to send Arsenal top of the Premier League table.
After a rocky first half hour against Man City on Saturday afternoon, the Tottenham Hotspur defence put in a very solid display to come away with a clean sheet.
Cristian Romero led the backline masterfully, making two successful tackles, six recoveries, three clearances, one block and three interceptions. City simply could not find a way past him.
Few players put in as much of a shift this weekend as Marcos Senesi. No player in the Premier League made more clearances (11) in gameweek two than the Bournemouth centre-back, who also completed four recoveries, two interceptions and one tackle against Wolves. He was central to the Cherries’ 1-0 home win.
A superb day’s work from Riccardo Calafiori, who looked excellent against Leeds. The Italian may have been outshone by his teammate on the opposite side of the backline, but he was nonetheless integral to both defence and attack, registering two assists.
The Tottenham midfield physically bullied Man City and Joao Palhinha was at the heart of their heroic efforts. The former Fulham man has a habit of distorting team shape when he speeds into challenges all over the pitch, but he was very disciplined in Thomas Frank’s system.
Chelsea won’t have many easier nights than this past Friday as they ran roughshod over West Ham, winning 5-1 at the London Stadium. Moises Caicedo provided one of those goals, while he once again demonstrated that he is the engine motoring this midfield along. The 23-year-old touched the ball 87 times and wasn’t dispossessed once.
The Hammers’ defence was a shambles, but you can’t take anything away from Joao Pedro’s performance. The Brazilian opened the scoring and provided two assists to play a key role in Chelsea dismantling of their London rivals. He’s already looking like £60m well spent.
Yankuba Minteh didn’t come away with a goal or assist, but he deserved at least one at Everton on Sunday. The winger was a huge threat, constantly getting into dangerous areas in the box.
The Toffees couldn’t get a handle on him and were very fortunate to come away with a clean sheet. Minteh had more touches in the opposition box (13) than any other player in the Premier League this weekend, while only two other players created as many chances (four). One of those was a big chance for Danny Welbeck, who overran the ball slightly before hitting the ball wide.
It feels like forever ago since we last got a glimpse of Jack Grealish at his silky best. The Everton loanee should be a lot of fun to watch this season if his full debut is anything to go by.
The winger swung in a perfect cross for Iliman Ndiaye to boot in, before setting up James Garner for their second to seal the first victory at their new ground.
Big Vik is still finding his feet in Mikel Arteta’s system and the Premier League, but the Swedish striker took the opportunity to fill his boots against weaker opposition with both hands.
Gyokeres used his pace and power to put himself in a great position in the box before slotting inside the near post for his opener. With Bukayo Saka off the pitch due to an injury, he took on penalty duties to score his second and Arsenal’s fifth of the day.
