A Premier League season that has fascinated from the first whistle brought another remarkable round of action this weekend, the final unbeaten records in the division ended as Aston Villa and Everton suffered emphatic defeats.

Elsewhere Manchester United and Chelsea played out a goalless draw in a clash that saw both sides seem to prioritise a clean sheet over three points, whilst Jamie Vardy delivered against Arsenal once more as Leicester secured a first win in north London since 1973.

It’s that time of the week again where we compile our dream side from the weekend’s action, here is the Football Faithful’s Premier League Team of the Week:

Goalkeeper: Edouard Mendy – Chelsea

Frank Lampard has confirmed that Chelsea’s number one shirt is Edouard Mendy’s to lose following a solid start to life at Stamford Bridge, with the goalkeeper producing another accomplished performance during the weekend’s goalless draw at Manchester United.

The Senegalese shot-stopper recovered from almost scoring a bizarre own goal with some wayward passing to make a series of fine saves, denying Marcus Rashford and Juan Mata with solid stops in the first half.

Mendy saved brilliantly to deny Rashford once more late on, his huge frame providing Chelsea with a goalkeeping presence they have lacked of late.

Right-back: Aaron Wan-Bissaka – Manchester United

Another display of diligent defending from the Manchester United full-back who truly thrives in one-against-one duels, Wan-Bissaka will be pleased with his afternoon’s work against Chelsea after largely nullifying the threat of the electric Christian Pulisic.

The 22-year-old was also tested by Ben Chilwell’s forward forays but coped excellently with the double threat on the Chelsea left, his tenacity and tackling ability again proving a nightmare for opposition wide men.

Centre-back: Thiago Silva – Chelsea

The kind of performance Frank Lampard will have been hoping for when securing the signing of the veteran during the summer, Silva a commanding and calming presence at the heart of the Chelsea defence.

The 36-year-old led and marshalled the visitor’s backline as they kept a second clean sheet within a week, organising those around him in the manner of a player who has spent the majority of his career at the very top.

Silva’s signing was a gamble given his advancing years, but his leadership is invaluable to this side and he looked right at home in the centre of a back three formation at Old Trafford.

Centre-back: Wesley Fofana – Leicester

Brendan Rodgers has urged patience with the summer signing but the teenager has swiftly proven he is ready-made for the Premier League, Fofana hugely impressive as Leicester secured a first win at Arsenal in almost four decades.

The 19-year-old was strong defensively and assured when in possession, whilst his recovery pace was evident as he competed with the Arsenal attack throughout.

The experience of Jonny Evans alongside him will have helped, but this was a fine display from a youngster adapting to a new league and club, Fofana looking like the latest shrewd signing from Leicester’s savvy recruitment team.

Left-back: Arthur Masuaku – West Ham

West Ham battled valiantly to secure a draw with Manchester City at the London Stadium this weekend, ending a wretched recent record that had seen them concede 22 goals in just five fixtures against Pep Guardiola’s side on home soil.

Amongst their key performers was wing-back Arthur Masuaku, who performed with typical industry and energy down the left flank.

The 26-year-old has taken time to win over the West Ham fans but has impressed since being given greater freedom at wing-back, playing a key role in the Hammers’ recent revival and contributing at both ends of the pitch this weekend.

Midfield: James Ward-Prowse – Southampton

Southampton have enjoyed their best start to a season in six years and comfortably dispatched of previously unbeaten league leaders Everton on Sunday, with captain James Ward-Prowse at the heart of a dominant display.

Ward-Prowse was excellent in the press and helped midfield partner Oriol Romeu break up the play, in addition to opening the scoring with a sweetly-struck strike for his first goal of the season.

Happy to drop deep to pick up possession and keep the Saints ticking, the England international was the heartbeat of a fine performance for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side.

Midfield: Phil Foden – Manchester City

The half-time introduction of the midfielder helped turn the tide for Manchester City at the London Stadium, Foden taking just six minutes to make his mark with a brilliant equaliser for the visitors at West Ham.

It was a sharp touch, turn and finish from the youngster, who provided a reminder of the qualities he can bring to Pep Guardiola’s side.

Foden was bright and has the invention that City lack in the absence of Kevin De Bruyne, the ‘Stockport Iniesta’ stating his case for automatic inclusion in the starting side.

Midfield: Tanguy Ndombele – Tottenham

Last season’s trip to Burnley proved an unhappy experience for Tanguy Ndombele as he was hauled off at half-time at Turf Moor, his lacklustre showing later receiving public criticism from manager Jose Mourinho.

Seven months on from that low, Tottenham’s club-record signing was much improved in an encouraging display for the France international, driving forward with purpose from the Spurs midfield.

Afforded protection from Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Moussa Sissoko behind him, Ndombele thrived when pushing forward and provided attacking impetus before his late substitution.

Forward: Wilfried Zaha – Crystal Palace

Wilfried Zaha looks back to his very best and was once again Crystal Palace’s star turn during their 2-1 win at Fulham this weekend.

Zaha provided the assist for Jairo Riedewald’s opener with a clever reverse pass, before netting the second from close range for his fifth goal in just six Premier League fixtures so far this season.

The Ivorian is a major threat in a central role with his pace and fleet-footed style and the Eagles will be delighted they once again managed to retain the services of their talisman during the summer.

Forward: Patrick Bamford – Leeds

Patrick Bamford’s previous ventures in the Premier League have proven hugely underwhelming but he has found a home for himself in the Leeds attack under Marcelo Bielsa.

Bamford scored a sensational hat-trick as Leeds ended Aston Villa’s perfect record on Friday night, scoring a close-range rebound to open the scoring before two finishes of the highest quality.

His second was a fiercely struck dipping effort from the edge of the box, before a classy curling finish when surrounded by a host of Villa defenders completed his hat-trick.

The 27-year-old has now scored six goals in six league fixtures with only Son Heung-Min and Dominic Calvert-Lewis having netted more, his prolific start the best of any Leeds player in a Premier League season since Eric Cantona in 1992/93.

Forward: Michail Antonio – West Ham

Manchester City’s defence struggled to cope with the threat posed by Michail Antonio this weekend, the West Ham star continuing to flourish in a centre-forward role.

Antonio opened the scoring with a stunning acrobatic finish and proved a constant menace to Ruben Dias and Eric Garcia, the duo unable to live with the pace and power of the Hammers forward.

Antonio’s goal was his 11th since the Premier League’s restart in June with only Tottenham’s Harry Kane having scored more in that time, his continued excellence sparking talk of a surprise England call.

West Ham will be sweating over his fitness after he was forced off through injury in the first half, their drop in performance following his exit further underlining his importance to David Moyes’ side.
