Leicester City are reportedly confident of beating Liverpool to the signing of 21-goal Celtic centre-forward Odsonne Edouard this summer.

According to an exclusive report from TeamTalk, Leicester are expecting to beat off competition from Liverpool and West Ham to land the attacker.

The report claims Edouard is poised to leave Celtic at the end of the season as his current contract with the Scottish giants expires in 2022.

ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT

Edouard has scored 21 goals for Celtic in all competitions this season, including 16 goals in 26 appearances in the Scottish Premiership. Whilst this is a respectable return for the French forward, Liverpool have been linked with strikers who have better records in some of Europe’s top-five leagues. For example, Liverpool have been touted with interest in Fiorentina’s Dusan Vlahovic, who is two years younger than Edouard and has scored 19 goals in 30 Serie A starts.

This means that Liverpool may not lose much sleep over missing out on Edouard if he makes the move to Leicester. Of course, Liverpool would then need to be able to go out and sign a player of Vlahovic’s pedigree to balance it out, or else they could rue not signing a striker to bolster their squad. Vlahovic’s record in the Serie A suggests that he could add some extra goalscoring threat to Jurgen Klopp’s attacking options, whilst it is difficult to judge how Edouard’s goalscoring in Scotland will translate over to England.

Time will tell whether or not the 21-goal attacker will be a success for Leicester in the Premier League. On paper, it does not appear to be a deal Liverpool will regret not completing, but you never know what can happen in football. Edouard could go to Leicester and score 25 goals in the Premier League next season. Equally, he could score three goals and struggle to settle. Liverpool can only deal with the evidence in front of them in the present, though, and that suggests Edouard should not be a priority target.
