Édouard Mendy (Chelsea)

It’s not often that goalkeepers snatch the headlines away from forwards scoring Púskas Award contenders every week – but we couldn’t ignore Édouard Mendy.

Chelsea ended this weekend with three points and that was made possible by their stopper who somehow kept Brentford at bay despite them peppering his goal.

Following his Saturday heroics, Mendy became the fourth quickest goalkeeper in Premier League history to reach 20 clean sheets, doing so in 38 appearances.

Mendy made six saves against Brentford, the joint most he has ever made in a top-flight game and while none were ‘spectacular’, he exudes security that makes him unbeatable.

Petr Čech deserves credit for his insistence over the ex-Rennes man, after all it was his scouting and persistence that forced his arrival amid uncertainty over Kepa.

But the 29-year-old has adjusted to life seamlessly at Stamford Bridge and offers everything you want in a modern goalkeeper – agility, presence, commandment of his area and even technical quality.

“Ed (Mendy) was absolutely decisive to escape with a clean sheet,” Thomas Tuchel told reporters after the game.

“I don’t know how many saves he made, but there were a lot of very important saves and he does it every week for us.

“He bails us out, whether it’s once or twice, or in this game on several occasions. He’s a world-class goalkeeper and the one we’ve got to thank.”

Five years ago, Mendy was released by Cherbourg, a small club in the French third division where he hardly played.

He was forced into the local job centre in his hometown of Le Havre to try and find work, with professional football feeling further away than ever.

Today, he is first choice at Chelsea, a Senegal international and more pertinently, a Champions League winner – and showing no signs of slowing down.
